Metro Manila, Philippines - The Philippine Embassy in Paris said authorities are investigating the disappearance of a bust of national hero Dr. José Rizal, a monument long regarded as a symbol of friendship between the Philippines and France, after it was reportedly stolen last week from its pedestal in the French capital.

In a statement, the embassy said the bust, located at Place José Rizal in the city’s 9th arrondissement, was likely removed overnight between Oct. 25 and 26. The incident has been reported to local authorities, and embassy officials are coordinating closely with the police in the investigation.

“The Philippine Embassy in Paris regrets the disappearance of Dr. José Rizal’s bust, a significant monument for the Filipino community in France,” the embassy said, adding that it “remains committed to preserving the memory and values that the monument represents.”

The Rizal bust, unveiled in 2019, has served as a gathering place for Filipinos in Paris and a reminder of the country’s historic ties with France.

The reported theft comes amid heightened security in the French capital following the recent robbery at the Louvre Museum, which prompted concerns over the protection of public art and heritage monuments.

While the motive for the removal remains unclear, embassy officials said public monuments “are often vulnerable to vandalism or even destruction or theft.”

They said they are working with French authorities and the Filipino community to explore recovery or replacement options.
