Piggatan bridge in Cagayan collapses
Metro Manila, Philippines - The Piggatan bridge in Alcala, Cagayan collapsed on Monday, Oct. 6, as oversized trucks crossed the structure, the Public Works Department said.
In a statement, the agency said preliminary investigation showed that three trucks – with an estimated weight of 50 tons each, were on the bridge when it collapsed. The bridge has a capacity of 18 tons.
The DPWH said Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered a thorough assessment.
The agency advised motorists to avoid the area and take alternative routes via the Jct. Gattaran – Cumao – Capissayan – Sta. Margarita Bolos Point Road to Baybayog – Baggao – Sta. Margarita Road and vice versa.
The Cagayan provincial information office said authorities are still assessing whether people were injured.
