Remulla’s cancer in remission, able to perform ombudsman duties, says office
Metro Manila, Philippines - Ombudsman Boying Remulla is able to perform his duties as the chief anti-graft buster as his cancer has been in remission for more than a year, his office said on Monday, Oct. 27.
In an interview over the weekend, Remulla revealed that he was diagnosed with leukemia after undergoing a quintuple bypass surgery, a complex heart operation, in 2023.
He said he has recovered after receiving cancer treatment.
The Office of the Ombudsman further clarified that Remulla is doing his duty with full vigor and dedication, and has been exercising to keep his fitness.
“Ang Ombudsman ay malaya na sa kanser at malaya na sa loob ng isa’t kalahating taon,” read the statement.

The office said having a second chance in life gave Remulla the determination and conviction that he no longer has anything to fear or delay.
“Tinitiyak namin sa publiko na determinado ang Ombudsman na papanagutin ang mga responsable sa isyung ito ng flood control — at higit pa siyang nasa mabuting kalagayan upang gawin iyon,” it said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Remulla as the new ombudsman on Oct. 7.
Before the appointment, Remulla served as the justice secretary.
