Magnitude 6 quake rocks Surigao del Norte
Metro Manila, Philippines - A magnitude 6 earthquake hit General Luna, Surigao del Norte on Friday Oct. 17, the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said, a week after the powerful tremor that rocked parts of Mindanao.
Phivolcs earlier reported the quake’s strength at magnitude 6.2, but downgraded it later.
The agency warned of possible aftershocks and damages from the tectonic quake.
Phivolcs said it recorded Intensity IV in parts of Southern Leyte, and in the cities of Cabadbaran and Surigao in Surigao del Norte, and Butuan in Agusan del Norte.
Other instrumental intensities were also reported:
Intensity III - Abuyog, Alangalang, Dulag, and Hilongos, Leyte
Intensity II - San Juan, Southern Leyte
Intensity I - Burauen, Leyte, Cagayan de Oro city, Davao city
On Oct. 10, Phivolcs recorded a so-called doublet earthquake: a 7.4-magnitude earthquake at 9:43 a.m, then a 6.8-magnitude at 7:12 p.m. The two distinct earthquakes jolted waters near Manay, Davao Oriental.
A 6.9 magnitude quake also struck Central Visayas on Sept. 30, killing over 70 people.
