LIST: Where to go to commemorate 52nd anniversary of Martial Law declaration
Metro Manila, Philippines — A number of groups across the country have scheduled activities, including a candle lighting ceremony, to mark the 52nd anniversary of the martial law declaration.
President Ferdinand E. Marcos, father of the incumbent president, signed a proclamation on Sept. 21, 1972 that signaled his 14-year dictatorship. He announced it on television on Sept. 23.
Here’s a list of activities to commemorate what some historians said was a dark period in the nation’s history.
Nationwide candle lighting campaign
The Buhay Ang EDSA Campaign Network will be leading a nationwide candle lighting campaign, with at least 22 areas participating.
In Metro Manila, the assembly will be at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City at 6:30 p.m. The event will begin at 7:15 p.m.
The group has yet to announce venues for Bacoor, Cavite; Olongapo, Zambales; San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan; and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte.

Film watching
Active Vista, a human rights education institution, will cap the week of film viewing with “11,103.”
“11,103” is a documentary by Jeanette Ifurung and Miguel Alcazaren about the government-recognized victims of human rights violations during the Marcos regime.
Those interested to watch can visit UPFI Film Center at the University of the Philippines-Diliman in Quezon City at 5 p.m.
Activity-filled afternoon in Cavite
Aside from joining the candle lighting event, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas will also have other activities beginning at 1 p.m.
Lasallian members will hold a slogan making and situationer, group sharing, plenum, and holy mass.
Protests
The Movement for Accountability, Truth, Change, and Human Dignity (MATCH) will stage a protest titled “Martial Law @ 52 Action in Baguio.”
Assembly will be at the post office Loop at 1 p.m.
One Big Fight for Human Rights and Democracy, an alliance of groups from Ateneo schools, will mount a mobilization event at Liwasang Bonifacio, a freedom park in Manila, at 9 a.m.
Bagong Alyansa Makabayan (Bayan), an alliance of progressive groups, will hold protest actions in the following areas:
Manila - Assembly at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila at 9 a.m., before marching to Mendiola. They are expected to have a program at 9:30 a.m.
Iloilo City - Forum, march protest and candle lighting from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Kalibo, Aklan - March at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Cebu - March from Fuente Osmena to Metro Colon from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bayan says there’s also a photo exhibit and theological reflection at the UP Cebu.
Bicol-Legazpi City - The chapter of Bayan in this area will have a protest caravan at Daraga-Legazpi from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., a “Misang Bayan at the Redemptorist Church by 5 p.m., and a cultural night starting 6 p.m.
Escalante, Negros - Mass at Mt. Carmel Church
Davao City - Mass action at Freedom Park, Roxas Avenue at 2 p.m.
