Metro Manila, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared Aug. 23 as a special non-working day to remember the 41st death anniversary of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., Malacañan Palace announced on Thursday.

Based on Proclamation 665, the Ninoy Aquino holiday, which falls on a Wednesday, Aug. 21, was moved to provide a longer weekend for Filipinos.

This results in an extended weekend, with Aug. 26 (Monday) a public holiday in celebration of National Heroes Day. Aug. 23 is a Friday.

“The celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day may be moved from August 21, 2024 to August 23, 2024 provided that the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day is maintained,” the proclamation read.

In 2024, Marcos removed the commemoration of the historic EDSA People Power Revolution, from the official list of holidays.
