Blackpink renews group contract with YG Entertainment – reports
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 6) – The K-pop supergroup Blackpink is here to stay as the quartet renewed their contract with YG Entertainment for their group activities, according to South Korean media.
The Yonhap News Agency quoted YG Entertainment as saying that its “board has completed a resolution about renewing the contracts with Blackpink's four members.” But it did not specify the length of their contracts.
There was no announcement yet with regard to the contracts for the individual activities of each member.
The contracts of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa expired last August as they marked their seventh year in the music industry, which sparked anxiety among fans about the group’s future.
The seventh year of a K-pop group is crucial as it marks the end of its exclusive contracts with its music labels.
Blackpink made its debut with "Whistle" and "Boombayah" in 2016 and has since become unstoppable in breaking records. The Recording Academy dubbed it as "The Biggest Girl Group in the World."
The quartet's sophomore album "Born Pink" made history in 2022 after topping the Billboard 200 charts, making them the first female group to rank No. 1 since 2008. It was also the first K-pop girl group to top the United Kingdom's Official Charts last year.
Blackpink also made history by being the first Asian act to headline the Coachella music festival in the US and the BST Hyde Park concert series in the UK.
All four members were recently named Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBEs) in recognition of the band’s climate change advocacy.
