Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 24) — Starbucks Philippines will offer a one-day 40% discount to senior citizens, persons with disability (PWDs), and other eligible customers on Wednesday, Jan. 24, after it was criticized for putting a discount cap.
Starbucks said the discount promo applies to hand-crafted and bottled beverages, food and pasties, whole beans and tea bags, and ready to eat products.
Also among those who can avail the discount are national athletes, eligible solo parents, and medal of valor recipients.
It added that an additional ₱10 discount will be applied if an eligible customer brought their personal cup or tumbler.
The promo will run from 5 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. in all Starbucks stores nationwide. But for eligible solo parents, it will only apply to those in Mandaluyong City, Quezon City, San Pablo City, and Angeles City, Pampanga.
Lawmakers earlier brought up complaints against the popular coffee chain’s alleged failure to comply with laws benefiting elderly and PWDs after it posted a signage which limits senior citizens, PWDs, and other government discounts to only one drink and food per visit beginning Jan. 15.
In a House hearing on Jan. 17, Starbucks Philippines Operations Manager Angela Cole admitted that the signage was “erroneous.”
“It was not properly worded, and we’re taking full accountability and acknowledged the mistake,” she said.
Under the law, senior citizens and PWDs are entitled to a 20% discount and value-added tax exemption on certain goods and services from all establishments for their exclusive use, enjoyment, or availment.
