
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 21) — 9 Works Theatrical has unveiled the cast of its 2024 staging of Broadway musical “Rent,” which will premiere in April.
Based loosely on Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” Jonathan Larson’s “Rent” is about a group of struggling young artists and musicians in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
The local theater company announced that Anthony Rosaldo will play Roger while Ian Pangilinan and Reb Atadero will portray Mark, and Molly Langley and Thea Astley will take the role of Mimi.
Justine Peña and Jasmine Fitzgerald will also be on stage as Maureen together with Adrian Lindayag and Lance Reblando as Angel, and Mica Fajardo and Fay Castro as Joanne.
The character Tom Collins will be portrayed by Garrett Bolden and Markki Stroem. Stroem will also play Benny together with Guji Lorenzana, who will also act as Mr. Johnson.
The Filipino cast of “Rent” also includes Abi Sulit (Pam), Jordan Andrews (Gordono), Misha Fabian (Ally), Chesko Rodriguez and Paul Valdez (Steve), Kai Banson (Alexi Darling), and Vyen Villanueva (Paul).
9 Works Theatrical has yet to announce the play’s ticketing details and other information.
It previously staged Rent in 2010 and 2011.
Premiered on Broadway in 1996, “Rent” features songs such as “Season of Love,” “Light My Candle,” and “Take Me or Leave Me.”
It won various awards such as four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1996.
“Rent” also had a film adaptation in 2005 with Anthony Rapp and Idina Menzel as cast members and a television series titled “Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway” in 2008.
