MMDA pushes nature-based solutions to mitigate Manila flooding

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced plans to build nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure to reduce flooding around the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RSMC) in Manila.

In a statement on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the agency said the proposed public works are part of the “Metro Manila Sponge City Project,” which seeks to improve flood management and mitigation.

The MMDA said the bioretention areas, rain gardens, and bioretention ponds are designed to hold rainwater, whereas vegetated drainage corridors and permeable walkways will absorb and redirect it to the surrounding drainage system.

The agency added that it is looking to develop open green spaces, shaded pedestrian areas, and other green facilities that would benefit the public.
