Pope Leo XIV sleeps calmly after lung surgery

Metro Manila, Philippines – Pope Leo XIV slept soundly after his successful lung surgery, the Holy See press office said Wednesday morning, Oct. 14.

The press office said “the night passed calmly for the Pope” and that further information about his condition will be provided within the day.

The statement came a day after the pontiff underwent a lung operation for his diagnosed lung adenocarcinoma at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, Italy.

According to reports from the Holy See press office, the Pope was in the operating room for about three hours while the surgery lasted more than an hour. The surgeons who performed the surgery said the procedure was completed without complications.

The lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique “to ensure a radical resection.”

The tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of lung cancer as suspected from prior tests.

Post-operation exams will be conducted on the removed tissue in the succeeding days.
