Metro Manila, Philippines – The water regulator ordered concessionaires nationwide to step up water conservation efforts as part of preparations ahead of the forecast “super El Niño.”
In a public advisory on Wednesday, Oct. 7, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) directed service providers to prioritize the requirements of critical health care facilities and continue monitoring water sources, reservoirs, and supply infrastructure to anticipate and manage potential shortages.
It added that providers must continue demand management measures similar to strategies adopted in previous El Niño events, as well as prepare for dry conditions and possible heavy rainfall.
The NWRB also encouraged concessionaires to extend assistance to nearby providers encountering water shortages, without compromising their own supply requirements.
In a Monday (Oct. 5) press briefing, Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said all provinces may encounter drought by the end of March next year due to the possible “very strong” El Niño.
