Rainy weekend in Luzon due to ‘habagat’ – PAGASA

Metro Manila, Philippines – The weather bureau forecast a rainy weekend over parts of Luzon as the southwest monsoon continues to bring heavy rains that have affected over seven million people. 

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reports heavy rainfall beginning Friday, Aug. 28 until Monday afternoon, Aug. 31. These are:

Aug. 28 to Aug. 29

+100-200 mm: La Union, Benguet, Bataan, Zambales, and Occidental Mindoro

+50-100 mm: Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, Abra, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, and Oriental Mindoro

Aug. 29 to Aug. 30

+100-200 mm: Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan

+50-100 mm: Ilocos Norte, Abra, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Oriental Mindoro

Aug. 30 to Aug. 31

+100-200 mm: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, and Zambales

+50-100 mm: Batanes, Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro

PAGASA on Friday raised a red rainfall warning over Zambales and Bataan (Morong, Hermosa, and Dinalupihan). Severe flooding is expected in these areas. 

Strong rain and possible flooding is also expected in Metro Manila, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Rizal, and Tarlac on Friday.  

Meanwhile, a low pressure area northeast of Itbayat, Batanes has a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours. 

The severe weather from the southwest monsoon and the recent tropical cyclones has affected over seven million people or more than two million families across regions, according to the Office of Civil Defense. 

Disaster management officials have reported 31 deaths, 17 injured, and three missing people from flooding and landslides. 

They pegged damage at nearly ₱6 billion for infrastructure and ₱2.05 billion for agriculture. 

The government has provided ₱1.49 billion in aid.
