James Younghusband challenged by World Cup snub

James Younghusband will have to settle for a place in the stands as brother Phil will lead the attack for the Azkals.

It was something the elder Younghusband has known for awhile.

“I got a call actually from coach Thomas Dooley about two weeks ago before the squad was announced (on May 25),” said Younghusband. ” I appreciate his call and letting me know before I found out publicly.”

The influx of new talent is said to be the reason for the snub.

“He (Dooley) just let me know that there’s some new players coming in and that I won’t be involved this time,” said Younghusband.

Despite being dropped from the national team, Younghusband sees this as something he can overcome.

“This is the third time I’ve been dropped. I’ve been (dropped) twice before that and I’ve always bounced back,” said Younghusband. “I see this as a challenge and I know that it will make me stronger.”

There is no hint of any bad blood from the midfielder, saying he will be there to support the Azkals in their World Cup Qualifying fixture.

“It’s going to be a good game to watch, and I’ll be there to support the boys.”
