
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Following the announcement of various disaster preparedness plans, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Friday (May 29) that it will hold a metrowide earthquake drill on July 30.
The earthquake drill, which aims to properly inform the public about quake survival methods, is scheduled to run from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the morning.
Pasig City also scheduled a nighttime drill at its central business district from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The MMDA also called out for volunteers for its Metro Manila Rescue Volunteer Corps (MMRVC).
More than 1,000 have already signed up, but the MMDA said 8,000 is needed for the earthquake response training.

In a previous interview with CNN Philippines, MMDA head Francis Tolentino explained that his office wanted metro residents prepared for two earthquake scenarios — daytime and nighttime.

The MMDA also previously announced plans of declaring a no-work day on July 30 to better execute the disaster drill.
Aside from requiring establishments to close during the exercise, the MMDA also sought to shut down the metro’s power supply and telecommunication lines.

In a related development, the MMDA also sat down on Thursday (May 28) with 84 barangay captains whose jurisdictions lie along the the West Valley Fault, for a rescuers’ skills olympics set in June.

The MMDA also unveiled its mobile earthquake simulator on Thursday. The apparatus can replicate tremors of up to magnitude 7.
