Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 5) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) concluded the period for the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections with over 1.4 million aspirants.

In a statement Tuesday, the poll body announced a total of 1,414,487 filed candidacies as of 8:30 a.m.

Nearly 97,000 are aspirants for punong barangay (chairman) and over 730,000 eye posts in the sangguniang barangay (barangay council). Meanwhile, at least 92,000 aspire for SK chairman and around 493,000 to become SK members.

Comelec said there was a “significant increase” in the number of aspirants this year compared with the 1.19 million in the last elections on May 14, 2018.

“The results are more than what we can ask for. Our congratulations and much appreciation to everyone who joined and assisted us in this activity,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia said.

The poll body began the COC filing period on Aug. 28 and concluded it on Sept. 2. It was extended in Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, and Abra to Sept. 3 and 4 due to the suspension of government work because of stormy weather.
