Security expert: Marcos admin deserves credit for transparency in reporting real situation in WPS

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 8) — A security expert on Tuesday recognized the efforts of Philippine authorities in being more transparent when reporting the real situation in the disputed waters.

“I think the administration, the government, and the military deserve great credit because what they have done this year is a new approach,” security expert Raymond Powell told CNN Philippines’ The Source.

Citing the water cannon incident on Aug. 5, Powell said footage collected by authorities served as proof to show the aggressive actions done by the China Coast Guard (CCG) equipped with larger ships against the Philippines’ smaller resupply boats.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday confirmed that the Philippines summoned China’s ambassador and filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing following the incident on Aug. 5 when the CCG fired a water cannon at Philippine ships headed to troops in BRP Sierra Madre to bring supplies.

The video released by the Philippine Coast Guard showed how close the aim of the cannon was.
