While CNN’s monthly round-up actively seeks out music from different regions of the Philippines, it would be a disservice to say that certain music is defined, and thus limited, to where it’s from. Popular music, after all, is the result of a diverse range of influences, crossing borders between the local and foreign, the urban and rural, and the mainstream and underground.
Recent developments and efforts to further reinforce music industries outside of Metro Manila are taking place, like the recent Sonik Sessions: Music Export 101 in Cebu City that connected international expertise to local musicians. Music worth listening to is emerging all over the Philippines, and a list like this is barely scratching the surface.
That being said, it’s worthwhile to provide some points of interest for listeners to embark on with this list of fresh releases to lend your ears to.

“…For Any of This” by Memory Drawers
Dream pop trio Memory Drawers returns at last with “…For Any of This,” where electronic drum rhythms and jangly guitars surface sobering reveries. Its tenderness for early 2010s Pinoy indie pop is well-felt, and the band’ s take lends it a certain timelessness.

“Okaeri” by Spacedog Spacecat
Cult favorites Spacedog Spacecat’s latest track “Okaeri” demonstrates a heavier side of the band’s repertoire, marrying melodic synths and violins with The Deftones’ heavy-hitting crescendos. It doesn’t feel like a departure from the band’s excellent debut album “Fuzz Sounds,” but a natural progression that evokes tinnitus in crowded bars.
