Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 20) – Motorcycle riders caught using the bike lane along EDSA will be fined ₱1,000 beginning Monday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
“Disregarding traffic sign ang violation na may kaakibat na ₱1,000 multa,” the MMDA said Sunday in a Facebook post.

According to the MMDA, cyclists were unable to use the bike lanes along EDSA because of the high volume of motorcycles using the designated pathways.
“Ang bike lane ay hindi fast lane para sa mga motorcycles,” the MMDA said. “Ang bicycle lane ay inilaan para sa mga cyclists o nagbi-bisikleta, hindi para sa mga motorcycle riders.”
[Translation: The bike lane is not a fast lane for motorcycles. The bike lane is intended for cyclists, not motorcycle riders.]
The Department of Transportation earlier said it is planning to construct 470 kilometers more of protected bike lanes and other pedestrian infrastructures across the country.
Meanwhile, Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito called for mandatory motorcycle riders’ education and a master plan for safer roads amid an alarming increase in accidents involving motorcycles.
