Switzerland gives Filipinas rude FIFA World Cup welcome

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 21) — The Philippine women’s football team absorbed a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in its maiden appearance in the FIFA World Cup Friday (Philippine time) at the Dunedin Stadium in New Zealand.

An exhilarating start by the Filipinas as Katrina Guillou scored a goal early in the first half but was ruled offside.

The Philippines showed flashes of brilliance on the defensive end, denying the Swiss booter a couple of open looks near the goal.

Switzerland’s relentless attack paid off as Ramona Bachmann was awarded a penalty kick, which she scored with ease at the 45th minute.

Momentum continued to favor Switzerland in the second half as the European nation controlled the tempo of the match.

Filipinas goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel was quick to save the Swiss’ first two near attempts, but Seraina Piubel found a way to get the third kick in at the 64th minute.

An added four-minute injury time was not enough for the Philippines to convert a goal as Switzerland secured the win.
