Gilas Women fall to South Korea for 6th place finish in FIBA Asia Cup

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 1) — Gilas Women ended their run in the 30th edition of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup with a 6th place finish after losing to South Korea, 71-80, at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Australia on Saturday.

The Filipino cagers started off strong and ended the first quarter with a one-point lead over the Koreans.

However, the opposition quickly bounced back to keep Gilas Women at bay.

South Korea finished the tournament at fifth place.

Gilas forward Afril Bernardino led the national team with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Center Jack Animam and shooting guard Khate Castillo added 12 points apiece.

Korean guard Jihyun Park led her team with 24 points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals.

Gilas Women won a game by dominating Chinese Taipei, 92-81, and lost four in the 2023 Cup.
