Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 4) — A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the waters off Gigmoto town in Catanduanes Tuesday evening, state seismologists report.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic tremor occurred at 8:54 p.m. with a depth of 72 kilometers (km).
The quake was earlier pegged at magnitude 6.6 with a depth of 9 kms.
Intensity 4 or \”moderately strong\” shaking was felt in Virac, Catanduanes.
Intensity 3 or \”weak\” shaking occurred in Prieto Diaz, and City of Sorsogon, Sorsogon; San Policarpo, Eastern Samar; Allen, Biri, Bobon, Catarman, Laoang, Lavezares, Rosario, San Jose, and San Roque, Northern Samar; Calbiga, and City of Catbalogan, Samar.
Intensity 2 or \”slightly felt\” shaking was recorded in Malinao, and City of Tabaco, Albay; City of Borongan, Eastern Samar; Babatngon, Dagami, Dulag, Palo, Santa Fe, and Tanauan, Leyte; City of Tacloban, Tacloban; and San Antonio, Northern Samar.
Alangalang, City of Baybay, and Tabontabon in Leyte experienced Intensity 1 or \”scarcely perceptible\” shaking.
The agency adds aftershocks are expected.
As of 11:45 p.m., the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said no damage or casualty has been reported.

Phivolcs also warned that minor sea-level disturbances, such as strong currents and rapid changes in seawater level are expected due to the quake.

‘ Based on the tsunami wave models and early tide gauge records of the tsunami, it is expected to experience wave heights of less than one meter above the normal tides and may be higher on enclosed bays and straits,” it said.
It forecasts the first tsunami waves to arrive between 9:02 p.m. to 12:54 a.m. Wednesday, and may continue for hours.
The agency canceled the alert at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday and reported that no significant sea level disturbances have been recorded since the earthquake.
