Be your own home barista with these new Nespresso blends
The home cafe TikTok was one of the better micro trends to come out of the pandemic’s chaotic stream of content. A lot of my COVID-related anxieties were quelled by watching baristas silently make drinks, the volume adjusted just enough so you could still hear the puffs of the milk steamer and the tamping of the coffee beans over the hum of lo-fi background music. When my family got our own Nespresso machine in 2021, it was like I unlocked something big — I could finally make my coffee close to the way those home baristas did it. The machine came with a small box of complimentary coffee capsules, with three from the brand’s Barista Creations Flavoured line. Instructions said that those were best to use for lattes, and so I had a blast making my “proper” lattes the shortcut way: popping the capsules in, pressing a button, and adding the milk. I’d top them off with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a generous heap of milk foam (made with a french press since I didn’t have a milk steamer). The rest of my family prefer a stronger coffee flavor, so I never got around to trying the Barista Creations again until recently at Nespresso’s relaunch of the Barista Creations Flavoured range. The Cocoa Truffle pod that I loved the first time was renamed to Cioccolatino, a bitter cocoa flavor with malted cereal notes, and the Caramel Creme Brulee was renamed Caramello, which as its name suggested has a caramel flavor and vanilla and coconut notes. The Vanilla Eclair pod is now called Vaniglia, with a flavor that tastes like its new name and features malted cereal notes. Nespresso has also introduced a new flavor: The Nocciola is the latest permanent addition to the collection. The coffee’s hazelnut blend is said to be a proven crowd-favorite based on data gleaned from the sales of their limited edition capsules, and after a couple of sips I understood why. Combined with oat milk, it had that non-cloying nuttiness that I like to look for in my daily brew. Make sure to use two pods for the maximum flavor experience. — GABY GLORIA

Read translated classics of Filipino literature
In 2020, Penguin Southeast Asia introduced the Penguin SEA Classics, presenting monumental works of literature from around the region. The series began with “Sulalat al-Salatin” (“The Genealogy of Kings”) by Muhammad Haji Salleh and the two-volume “Prisna” by Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit. Penguin SEA has already added two classics of Filipino literature, both translated by Prof. Danton Remoto: “Banaag at Sikat” (Radiance and Sunrise) by Lope K. Santos and “Mga Ibong Mandaragit” (The Preying Birds) by Amado V. Hernandez. We’ve encountered both books as required readings at school but the new translations underscore their relevance in today’s reading landscape even more, especially when there is a renewed interest in Jose Rizal’s novels “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” because of the show “Maria Clara at Ibarra” (now on Netflix). These two novels follow the nationalist strain of Rizal’s novels, particularly “Mga Ibong Mandaragit,” which has something to do with the treasure that gets lost in the end of “El Filibusterismo.”
The two Filipino books in Penguin SEA Classics are available in Fully Booked or through ACRE Intl Corp on Shopee. Next on the Penguin SEA Classics list: a translation of Hernandez’s “Luha ng Buwaya.” — DON JAUCIAN

Celebrate budots at Manila Community Radio’s Boiler Room-sponsored showcase
Characterized by a repetitive beat and blip-sounding synthesizers, budots have become an essential part of the Filipino music scene. The genre has spurred longform articles and documentaries exploring its origins. This weekend, Manila Community Radio is shining the spotlight on the “trailblazers and champions” of budots, with a billing that includes DJ Love, a music producer who’s largely credited as being the pioneer of the genre. Made possible through UK-based music broadcaster and club promoter Boiler Room’s Broadcast Lab grant scheme, the event will be held at an undisclosed location in Metro Manila on April 29. The lineup also includes Teya Logos, Libya Montes, Showtime Official Club, Hideki Ito, T33G33, obese.dogma777, and Pikunin. Apart from the DJ sets, there will also be a panel discussion moderated by The Flying Lugaw’s Elijah Pareno in which panelists will discuss the place of budots in the broader Southeast Asian region. Those who have questions for DJ Love may send them through this form. The event is invite-only, but interested attendees can request an invite through this link. — CNN PHILIPPINES LIFE STAFF
