Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 3)  Manila and Washington could start holding joint maritime patrols in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) this year, according to Philippine ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez.

In an exclusive interview with CNN Philippines, Romualdez confirmed the possibility of Australia and Japan joining — and conducting a “quad patrol” in the disputed waters.

\”I think Japan indicated that they are interested in how they can also be part of that…and Australia is considering this,\” he said.

Romualdez reiterated there is no country being targeted in the joint activity.

He said the basic purpose of such maritime exercises is to enhance the Philippines’ defense capabilities, as well as help maintain peace and stability in the region, especially in the WPS.

“This is the reality that we have to face — that if there is a conflict that we would be able to defend ourselves,” Romualdez added.

Earlier this week, the Japanese embassy in Manila said there is no specific plan or discussion yet on joint patrols among the four countries. However, it added it will explore the possibility of cooperating with partners to promote maritime law enforcement in the Indo-Pacific region.

More details on the proposed joint activity are expected to be tackled this April in the so-called \”2+2 meeting\” between defense and foreign affairs officials from the Philippines and the US.

China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will also be meeting this month to resume negotiations on a code of conduct in the South China Sea.
