
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 3) — Police on Friday broke up a human barricade of residents of Sibuyan Island in Romblon who were protesting alleged illegal mining activities in the area, leaving two persons hurt.

Residents who formed the barricade in front of the private port built by Altai Philippines Mining Corp. (AMPC) in Brgy. España, San Fernando were pushed away by police officers using their shields.

Kagawad Donato Royo, who was also part of the barricade, said the police handcuffed Romero but released him some two minutes after because residents were taking pictures of the arrest.

“Siya mismo ‘yong nagsasalita nang malakas na bakit daw hinaharass sila. Ayun hinuli siya at pinosasan, kasi ang intensyon talaga kung sino ‘yong mga nag-o-oppose na talagang pigilan ‘yong sasakyan ay ‘yon ang huhulihin nila,” Royo said.

As seen in the video, police also pulled away a man in a white shirt. Galicha said the man was a businessman who joined their barricade and his shirt was torn because of the incident.
