Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 9) — Neophyte volleyball club team Quezon City Gerflor Defenders is under investigation amid allegations that the players have not been paid their salaries.
The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) on Thursday said it is already looking into the matter.
“The PVL would like to inform everyone that the situation concerning the Gerflor Defenders and their players is currently under investigation,” the league said.
“Rest assured, we are committed to conducting a thorough and fair inquiry into the matter, ensuring that both the team’s representatives and the players involved will have an opportunity to be heard,” it also said.
“We take these matters seriously and will take all necessary steps to ensure the integrity and fairness of our league,” it added.
An alleged team player anonymously posted on Reddit that they have yet to be paid despite having a contract.
\”Mga mars, di pa din kami sumesweldo! Pero may contrata kami. Lagi lang kaming napapangakuan na next week daw dadating na ‘yung check from sponsor,\” the post read.
[Translation: Guys, we are yet to receive our salaries! This is despite having a contract. They always promise us that the check from the sponsor will come next week.]
Another post also claimed that they are just training in a barangay court.
The team management, on the other hand, acknowledged the problem it is facing.
“We acknowledge the problem, and we are currently working on an immediate solution to resolve it,” the Gerflor Defenders said.
“Rest assured that all matters will be resolved privately for the interest of everyone concerned,” it added.
The Gerflor Defenders made their debut in PVL during the Invitational Conference in June.
The team returned to the season-ending All-Filipino Conference with a new set of players and coach.
Sports analyst and former volleyball player Carmela Tunay on Wednesday also claimed that she was \”victimized\” by the same people managing Gerflor Defenders.
Tunay was supposed to play for PVL team Peak Form in 2021, but the team did not push through in competing.
\”For a team na PUNO NG LOGOS NG SPONSORS ang jersey, nasan ang budget for the players?\” Tunay said on X, formerly Twitter.
[Translation: For a team with jersey full of logos of sponsors, where is the budget for the players?]
\”I hope the PVL and GAB look into them cos right before I retired, I and my former teammates were also victimized by THAT person,” she added.
