Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 8) — Kaya FC-Iloilo has bowed out of contention in the AFC Champions League.
The reigning Philippines football league champions suffered a heartbreaking defeat against J1 league champions Yokohama Marinos on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, 2-1.
Daizo Horikoshi scored the lone goal for Kaya as he delivered the equalizer in the 39th minute, following Yuhi Murakami’s opening goal for Yokohama in the 26th.
Kaya, however, conceded a late goal as Marinos substitute Yan Matheus Souza delivered the dagger in the 87th minute.
\”We definitely thought here we had more of a chance to win the game in terms of being a threat to them,\” said Kaya FC-Iloilo head coach Colum Curtis.
This marks Kaya’s fourth consecutive loss in Group G, which eliminated them from qualifying for the round of 16.
Kaya will next face Shandong Taishan on Nov. 28 in Jinan, China.
