Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 2) – As the saying goes: new year, new me. But how does one go about crafting a powerful New Year’s resolution?

Life and career coach Aurora Suarez has five tips on how to do just that.

Make a commitment to yourself

“We’re very good at making commitments to others, to our boss, to our parents, to our children. A resolution is a very personal commitment,” Suarez told CNN Philippines’ Newsroom Ngayon on Monday.

Think of your future self

“Pag-isipan niyo, one year from now gusto ko ba na ganito pa rin ako? Think even longer term, 10 years from now do I want myself to still be this way?” she said.

“Really think about how you want to be at the end of the year. How are you? Where are you? What has changed in your life and how has your life changed as a result of these changes?” Suarez continued.

Know your ‘why’

The “why” is the intention behind the commitment or resolution. How important is it to you?

“Even if your commitment is falling by the wayside, you keep going back to ‘why am I doing this?’” she said.

Be aligned with your values

“Is this aligned with your values, the resolution or intention that you want? Is this important or aligned to what you want?” Suarez asked.

Do it for love

Suarez said that this aspect of love is what makes a commitment sustainable. “For example, if you are doing an exercise program, do I love doing this exercise? Or even out of love for your family or for others that you’re showing up in the best and healthiest way you could possibly be.”

Furthermore, Suarez emphasized the importance of sustainability and consistency. She stressed the importance of “small, baby steps” in achieving resolutions and commitments.

“If your goal is to lose a big amount of weight or earn so much money, it might not be realistic. It’s better to make small, baby steps consistently rather than big giant steps that are unsustainable,” she said.
