PAGASA: Flooding expected in Visayas, Mindanao due to LPA rains

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 12) — Flooding may be experienced in parts of the Visayas and Mindanao due to rains brought by a low pressure area (LPA), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Thursday.

Speaking to CNN Philippines’ New Day, weather forecaster Veronica Torres said the LPA last spotted east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte will bring cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Negros Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands.

The LPA and the shear line will also bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Romblon, and the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Moderate to heavy rains will be experienced in these areas, Torres added.

Several local government units have announced class suspensions due to the bad weather.

PAGASA said the LPA has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

“As it moves further to the southern Luzon area, there is a chance that it may weaken and then because of the effect also of the shear line, it may weaken and then become a part of the shear line,” Torres said.

However, rains may still continue over the weekend, specifically in Metro Manila. For areas in the eastern part of the country, a rainy weather is expected until the next few days, she added.

Torres also said rains over the Visayas area will continue until Jan. 14. Rains will also continue over the eastern part of Northern Luzon due to the northeast monsoon.
