Metro Manila, Philippines – Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David on Holy Week urged Filipinos to move beyond suffering and rediscover hope, as the country grapples with global conflict and economic strain.
In an interview on The Newsmaker, David said many Filipinos remain focused on hardship, especially amid the Middle East crisis and rising prices of fuel and basic goods.
“We often forget that the real conclusion of the Holy Week is Easter,” he said.
The Catholic leader noted that while Holy Week traditions center on suffering and sacrifice, the message of the season ultimately points to renewal and victory over adversity.
“We are too focused on suffering… we are not yet an Easter people,” he said.
David said the observance of Holy Week should lead to a deeper understanding of faith anchored in hope.
“I wish and pray that our people could be led to a moment of awakening… a resurrection experience,” he added.
He said faith must be lived through love and solidarity, especially during times of crisis.
“In the Christian faith, we cannot even speak of faith and hope without speaking of love,” he said.
The cardinal also called on Filipinos to stay united despite challenges brought by global tensions and domestic pressures.
“Hindi ito panahon ng pagkakanya-kanya… ito yung panahon na dapat magkabuklod tayo,” he said.
[Translation: This is not a time for division… this is a time when we must come together.]
“Solidarity is really the key to human survival,” he added.
David also encouraged Filipinos, including those abroad, to stay connected through faith and a shared purpose.
“It is important… to be united in spirit… even if we are physically distant,” he said.
As the country observes Holy Week, he urged the public to go beyond ritual and actively take part in renewal and transformation.
