MMDA, Meralco to install solar-powered waiting sheds in Metro Manila within the year

Metro Manila, Philippines – Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) General Manager Nicolas Torre said on Wednesday that the agency is finalizing its plans to install solar-powered waiting sheds in Metro Manila within the year.

The project will be carried out in partnership with MERALCO and a private company, which Torre has yet to disclose.

Torre noted that the project is in line with the agency’s goal of increasing power production in the region.

“Isa sa mga nakita namin is two-in-one, yung ating mga waiting shed together with our drive to make the city walkable and bikeable,” Torre said.

“It will be done at no cost to the government,” Torre added, explaining that no public funds will be spent on the project and that the government’s role is only to provide the areas where it will be implemented.

The public will first see the installment at a waiting shed along EDSA.

Torre also shared that the agency is coordinating with the Department of Energy and other government agencies to fast-track waste-to-energy programs aimed at addressing residual solid waste and diversifying the country’s energy mix by converting waste into energy.
