Metro Manila, Philippines – From easing fears of first-time digital users to tightening safeguards against scammers, BDO Pay is steadily carving a space in the wallets of Filipinos—literally and figuratively.
For decades, BDO Unibank has been synonymous with traditional banking. But as habits shift, the bank is pushing its reach further with BDO Pay, a mobile payment app launched in March 2021. More than just an alternative to cash, the app represents BDO’s attempt to take what it already does well in physical branches and make it accessible on a phone screen.
“Digitalization is about understanding the next generation and matching technology with the market segment,” says Roy L. Villareal, Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Banking under BDO’s Consumer Banking Group.
Villareal admits the journey is ongoing, especially outside the big cities. “In more provincial areas, customers are still not as familiar with banking in general, so we need to adjust our pace accordingly—guiding them patiently and simplifying processes,” he adds.
