Metro Manila, Philippines – It’s all systems go for the turnover of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to its private operator on Sept. 14, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

In a press release on Monday, Sept. 9, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the transition will help modernize the main international gateway. The San Miguel-led consortium New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. will take over the operations and maintenance of the airport after bagging a 25-year concession agreement early this year.“We have no doubt these SMC-implemented projects, once completed, will conform with the comfortable, accessible, safe, secure, and affordable parameters we instituted in DOTr – that is, our transport infrastructures will provide comfortable, accessible, safe, sustainable and affordable travel experience,” Bautista was quoted as saying in the statement. He said the refurbished airport may serve up to 62 million passengers, nearly double the current number. The DOTr said the government could earn P900 billion revenues throughout the concession deal.
