Marcos to visit UAE for sustainability talks, witness economic, defense pacts

Metro Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will embark on a working visit to the United Arab Emirates to take part in global sustainability discussions and witness the signing of major bilateral economic and defense agreements.

“Nakatakdang umalis patungong United Arab Emirates si Pangulong Bongbong Marcos Jr. sa darating na Lunes, Jan. 12,” Palace press officer Claire Castro announced on Thursday, Jan. 8.

The president will attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, a high-level forum where world leaders are expected to discuss measures toward global sustainability. The visit is upon the invitation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“Makakasama ng pangulo ang iba pang heads of state at governments… sa pagtalakay sa isyu ng enerhiya, tubig, usaping pinansyal, pagkain at kalikasan,” Castro added.

Trade, defense deals

On the sidelines of the sustainability summit, Marcos is also scheduled to witness the signing of two key bilateral agreements: the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and a Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation.

Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said the CEPA aims to liberalize at least 90% of tariff lines and trade value, giving Philippine exporters broader access to the Gulf markets.

Once concluded, the CEPA will become the country’s fourth bilateral free trade agreement after those with Japan, South Korea, and the European Free Trade Association.

Beyond trade, officials say the defense cooperation agreement will strengthen security ties and institutional collaboration between Manila and Abu Dhabi, reflecting the growing strategic relationship.
