Oz Comes to Life on ScreenX: Inside the Philippine Premiere of ‘Wicked: For Good’

SM Mall of Asia turned pink and green for the Philippine premiere of the highly-anticipated Wicked: For Good, the second and final part of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked. One year after it first defied gravity in cinemas, director Jon M. Chu and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return to bring the story of Elphaba and Glinda to a close.

The premiere coincided with SM Cinema’s launch of its new premium screen called ScreenX, an innovative movie experience that is the first of its kind in the Philippines.

The Arrival of ScreenX

SM Cinema is once again at the forefront of Philippine entertainment with the grand launch of ScreenX — the first and only 270° ScreenX auditorium in the Philippines. Officially opened to the public on November 19 at SM Mall of Asia (coinciding with the official release of Wicked: For Good in theaters), ScreenX aims to surround audiences in a panoramic world where the film’s big moments stretch across three walls. The experience hopes to fully immerse viewers in breathtaking visuals and movie magic.

During the unveiling of the new theater, SM Cinema Senior Assistant Vice President Karen Zabaljauregui shared that ScreenX reflects SM Cinema’s commitment to presenting immersive entertainment for Filipino moviegoers.

Created in South Korea and slowly expanding all over the world, ScreenX is another new addition to the ever-expanding ways to enjoy movies on the big screen, following the steps of 3-D films, IMAX, and 4DX technology.

A “Wicked” Celebration

Alongside the launch of ScreenX, Universal Pictures Philippines also premiered the highly-anticipated Wicked: For Good to excited Filipino fans.

Wicked: For Good takes place soon after Elphaba (Erivo) declares war on the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), while her friend Glinda (Grande) remains under the Wizard’s power. The film adapts the Broadway show’s second Act, and features the arrival of Dorothy and other well-known characters from The Wizard of Oz.

To celebrate the occasion, guests were served Wicked-themed treats before the screening, including Yellow Brick Rolls (ebi tempura rolls), Glinda’s Bubbles (a pink, spherical rice pudding ball), and Elphaba’s Elixer (green-colored calamansi mocktail). Adding to the festivities, some attendees came dressed in pink and green, while drag queens and cosplayers attended in full Elphaba or Glinda regalia.

Prizes were also given to lucky guests who won a raffle based on their assigned seats inside the ScreenX theater and took home exclusive Wicked merchandise.

Changing the Cinema For Good

ScreenX, located on the 2nd floor of SM Mall of Asia, opened to the general public alongside Wicked: For Good on November 19th. Tickets are now available for Wicked: For Good via SM Cinema.
