Meteor shower attracts stargazers

PAGASA said August is one of the most popular times of the year to observe meteor showers.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Are you ready for this year’s cosmic show?

August’s meteor shower will surely bring out stargazers and curious sky watchers alike as the Perseid meteor shower fills up and puts on a dazzling display treat in the sky.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said up to 50 or more meteors are expected to streak across the sky on August 12 and 13 during the shower’s peak.

The state-run weather bureau said August is one of the most popular times of the year to observe meteor showers.

Vicente Malano, PAGASA acting administrator, said: “If the sky permits, the meteor shower will be observed with its peak in the late evening and early morning hours.”

Meteors are easiest to observe if there is no moonlight and light pollution, he added.

Bright moonlight, as veteran observers suggest, could ruin night vision and obscure the fainter meteors.

The meteor shower, PAGASA said, radiates out from the constellation Perseus, which is located in the eastern horizon during August.
