Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend brings screenings of favorite independent movies, an artist’s debut solo exhibit, a premiere night for lo-fi music videos with accompanying live performances, a panel discussion between illustrators and comic artists, and an exhibit on the influence of Japanese design.

“Ang Nawawala” and “Sana Dati” at Cinema ‘76
In Marie Jamora’s “Ang Nawawala,” a young man who hasn’t spoken since his twin brother’s death returns home and comes of age as he comes to terms with what he’s lost. In Jerrold Tarog’s “Sana Dati,” a woman’s wedding is thrown off course with the arrival of a mysterious person who reminds her of whom she really loves. Pau Tiu: “Copy/Paste”
The visual artist and graphic designer Pau Tiu is launching her first solo exhibit, which features mixed media and collages about concepts of originality, on July 9 at the Mozaic Living showroom at 1550 Sheridan, Mandaluyong. Drawing for Juan with Manix Abrera, Budjette Tan, and Gilbert Daroy
On July 9 from 2 to 4 p.m., the cartoonists and illustrators Manix Abrera (“Kikomachine Komix”), Budjette Tan (“Trese”) and Gilbert Daroy (a contributing cartoonist for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Esquire Philippines) will be having a panel discussion at the Lopez Museum and Library. Shoot Lo-fi: Premiere and Awards Night
The UP Underground Music Society is premiering all of the entries for this year’s Shoot Lo-Fi Music Video Making Competition on July 9. The event will also feature performances from Musical O, Tard, Sour Cheeks, Extrapolation, Teenage Granny, and Girls in Dirty Shirts. Entrance is ₱200 with one free drink. “Japanese Design Today 100”
The Metropolitan Museum of Manila (MET) has partnered with the Japan Foundation, Manila and the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, with the support of JT International (Philippines) Inc., for “Japanese Design Today 100,” an exhibition on the influence and legacy of Japanese design. The exhibition houses 100 objects, from clothing to furniture to everyday items, 89 of which are seen in Japan today, and 11 that harbor the styles and characteristics unique to Japanese design.
The exhibit runs from June 30 to Aug. 19 in the Tall Galleries at the MET. On July 9, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the museum will offer free admission, a guided tour of “Japanese Design Today 100,” and free CineMET screenings of the Japanese films “Voices of a Distant Star” and “Fukushima Hula Girls.”
