Duterte one of Facebook’s top global topics in 2016

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — President Rodrigo Duterte has only been in office for six months, but he is already one of Facebook’s top global newsmakers this 2016.

Duterte and the presidential elections in the country landed in the Top 5 most-talked about global topics on Facebook this year.

The Philippines’ tough-talking President joined the ranks of the heated U.S. presidential elections, the rise of augmented reality app Pokémon GO, and the surprising deaths of music icon David Bowie, and boxing legend Muhammad Ali on the list.

Facebook released the list of top global topics and top live videos on Thursday.

The Top 10 moments of this year’s Year in Review were measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts from January 1 to November 27, 2016. Facebook mentions were analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook, while the top live videos were measured by total views.
