What to do and where to go this weekend (Aug. 4 to 6)

The nine competing films for the 13th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will be screened Aug. 4 to 13 in CCP and in Ayala Cinemas in Metro Manila.

Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This week, get your fill of new local films by independent filmmakers, know more about the worldwide populist movement, engage other lovers of Philippine literature over Twitter, listen to local bands as they raise funds for a colleague, view artworks that bring war stories to life, meet the local comic book community, and take your pick among vintage finds in a Saturday market.

Cinemalaya 2017

Thirteen years since its inception, the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival continues to be a platform for emerging Filipino independent filmmakers. This year, nine full length films, among others, are in competition: “Ang Guro Kong ‘Di Marunong Magbasa” by Perry Escano, “Ang Pamilyang ‘Di Lumuluha” by Mes De Guzman, “Bagahe” by Zig Dulay, “Nabubulok” by Sonny Calvento, “Requited” by Nerissa Picadizo, “Respeto” by Alberto Monteras II, “Sa Gabing Nanahimik ang mga Kuliglig” by Iar Lionel Arondaing, “Baconaua” by Joseph Israel Laban, and “Kiko Boksingero” by Thop Nazareno.

The films will be screened Aug. 4 to 13 in CCP and in Ayala Cinemas in Metro Manila (Trinoma, Greenbelt 1, Glorietta 4, and UP Town Center). The festival officially opens Aug. 4, 6 p.m., in the CCP Main Theater, with a free screening of Mikhail Red’s “Birdshot.”

The Rise of Populist Authoritarianisms Worldwide

The transnational alternative policy group Focus on the Global South, along with the Block Marcos movement and other local groups, will host a conversation asking how and why populist movements and authoritarian regimes have been on the rise around the globe. Contributing to the discussion on Aug. 4, Friday, are senior analyst and anti-globalization thinker Walden Bello, French alter-globalization activist Christophe Aguiton, professor Robin Broad, and writer and researcher Shalmali Guttal.

The speakers will gather 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Max’s Restaurant Scout Tuazon Branch, 21 Scout Tuazon St., Quezon City. Admission is free. For more details, check the Facebook event page.

#FilipinoBookFriday is a weekly live chat conducted over Twitter by @FBFChat. This Aug. 4, Friday, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., the chat will promote writer Edgar Calabia Samar’s #BuwanNgMgaAkdangPinoy, in celebration of Buwan ng Wika.

Friends with Benefits: A Fundraising Gig for RJ Mabilin

RJ Mabilin’s website Alternatrip has been a wealth of resource for fans of local music. Bands such as The Strangeness, and Identikit have all performed live for the Alternatrip shows, which provide an intimate venue for established and up and coming indie bands.

This Saturday, August 5, the bands who were helped by Alternatrip will kickstart a fundraiser for Mabilin’s medical bills. Aside from the abovementioned bands, Oh, Flamingo!, Ourselves the Elves, The Geeks, Iain Penn, and Ang Bandang Shirley will be playing at Mow’s in Quezon City.

Komikon Indieket

Get ready for one whole day of komiks by local artists and storytellers this Saturday, Aug. 5 at Bayanihan Center in Pasig City. Special guests include Oliver Pulumbarit, Jonah Tinio-Calingo and Mel Casipit.

Sat x Future Market @ Hub: Secondhand and Vintage Saturday

The now-weekly Saturday Future Market at HUB: Make Lab at Escolta features four changing themes each Saturday of the month: open market; makers and creators; home, kitchen, and garden; and Escolta thrift and flea.
