PAGCOR suspends license of Resorts World Manila

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 9) — The country’s gaming regulator has suspended the license of Resorts World Manila (RWM) pending an investigation into an attack last week which resulted in the death of 37 hotel guests and employees. The lone gunman also killed himself after the rampage.

In a statement released on Friday, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) said RWM “must cease and desist all gaming operations while investigation on its liability regarding the June 2 incident is ongoing.”

PAGCOR said the suspension would remain in effect until RWM “rectifies its serious security lapses and deficiencies.”

Police investigators and lawmakers had earlier cited RWM’s breaches in security protocols.

Gaming regulators said what happened at RWM not only caused the loss of lives and damage to property “but also placed the Philippine gaming, tourism and hospitality industries in  bad light.”

PAGCOR said it would also be requiring all other hotel and casino facilities to submit security and safety protocols “to make sure that this will not happen again.”

In a similar move, House committee chair on games and amusement Rep. Gus Tambunting told CNN Philippines yesterday that solons planned to summon other casino establishments so that they could also  check on their security measures.

“PAGCOR will continue to safeguard the interest not only of all gaming industry players but also, of all guests, tourists and other stakeholders involved,” the statement said.
