
Manila (CNN Philippines Life) — This weekend, celebrate arts, music, and nature in a three-day festival, see an exhibit by two of the most interesting Filipino contemporary artists, watch a curated selection of local and international short films, go to your friendly neighborhood bar to watch a notable lineup of indie bands, register for a photo zine workshop, and buy local handmade items at an art market.

Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival 2017
This year, Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival again puts the spotlight on nature and culture in a three-day gathering of live performances, visual art showcases, and activities promoting the traditional arts of Mindoro.
Malasimbo 2017’s live performances include international acts such as: Afro-Cuban jazz pianist and Quincy Jones’ protégé Alfredo Rodriguez, Australian soul jazz performer Jordan Rakei, and Canadian electronic music artist Tennyson; and local acts such as Apartel, June Marieezy, No Rome, Brass Pas Pas Pas Pas, Similarobjects, CRWN, Curtismith, RH Xanders, and Skarm.
New art installations will be presented by Malasimbo’s resident visual artists, as well as continuing installations by Agnes Arellano, Wawi Navarroza, Ling Quisumbing Ramilo, and Olivia d’Aboville.
There will also be a silent disco, where guests can enjoy the music of some of the most promising local DJs through headphones. And to promote the tourism of the area, there will be workshops on Mangyan language and handicrafts.

Rider: Dina Gadia & Allan Balisi
Dina Gadia and Allan Balisi are known as Saturnino Basilla, a collaborative effort where they publish zines that focus on art, cinema, and underground culture. This weekend, the two artists will be having a duo exhibit called “Rider,” featuring paintings and drawings that push the boundaries of sequential imagery and narrative. For the exhibit, both artists have used found material from print and film media, exploring innuendos in psychological and humorous ways. As part of the exhibit, a new Saturnino Basilla zine will be produced.
“Rider” will open on Saturday, March 11 at Artery Art Space, 102 P. Tuazon Blvd., Cubao Quezon City.

Hosted by Kino Punch, UP Cinema’s film critique magazine, Pelikula Obskura is a pop-up screening of both international and local short films, such as “A Smile in the Back of My Head” by John Stewart, “Dadyaa” by Pooja Gurung and Bibhusan Basnet, “Dear Renzo” by Agostina Galvez and Francisco Lezama, “Freeze” by Nelicia Low, “Memorial ng Isang Saliksik” by Jan Pineda, “The Last Gig on Earth” by Mariah Reodica, and “Lunod” by Neica Dela Cruz.
Pelikula Obskura will be screening films on Friday, March 10 at Catch 272, T. Gener St. cor. Kamuning, Quezon City. Entrance is free.

Stay Useless, a gig production, is back for its second show this weekend, featuring the local indie bands Ciudad, The Sleepyheads, The Buildings, Cheap Vision, The Gory Orgies, and Yūrei. Stay Useless will take place on Friday, March 10 at Mow’s, Matalino St., Quezon City. Entrance is at ₱200 with a beer stub.

The Pleasure of Print: The DIY Process of Making a Photozine
“The Pleasure of Print” is a workshop and lecture on making photo zines. Instructed by the photographer Erin Nøir, the workshop will teach how to create a well-curated set of photographs bound by a powerful narrative. Participants will learn the basics of writing a story then applying it to a set of images, and then selecting and editing those pictures to compile into a mini magazine.

Maker’s Market at Central Square, BGC
This weekend, there will be an arts and handicrafts bazaar called Maker’s Market. The market promotes locally designed and handmade products, which will be on sale at this weekend’s bazaar, such as yarn, paint, cutters and sculpture materials, handmade soaps, paper quilled accessories and cards, handpainted paper mache forms, and handstitched leather goods and prints.
