Family of deceased cosmetic surgery patient mulling charges against clinic

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 29) — The family of the woman who died after undergoing cosmetic surgery is considering filing criminal charges against the clinic where she passed away.

Shirley Saturnino, the mother of the late Shiryl Saturnino, said The Icon Clinic must be held accountable for her daughter’s death.

Doon po namatay. Kailangan talaga panagutan nila kasi kung ang anak ko naman nagpayag magpa-opera sa kanila. Dapat tinignan nila kung kaya ng katawan ng anak ko,” she told CNN Philippines.

Shiryl, 29, passed away Sunday morning after going through surgeries at Icon Clinic on Saturday night.

Police say Saturnino had just undergone liposuction and breast and buttock augmentations when she lost her heartbeat.

Attending surgeons Jose Jovito Mendiola and Samuel Eric Yapjuangco tried to revive Saturnino and sought assistance from the Makati Medical Center, but the patient was later declared dead.

Mandaluyong City Police say charges may be filed against Icon Clinic if investigations show negligence on their part.

“For example may nakita tayo talagang negligence ang maaaring ikaso is criminal- reckless imprudence resulting to homicide,” Chief Investigator PS/Insp. Jose Villarta told CNN Philippines.

A police investigation and autopsy are underway to determine the cause of Shiryl’s death.

The Icon Clinic, meanwhile, has released a statement on Saturnino’s passing.

The Icon Clinic said it is cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation and is extending support to Saturnino’s family.

Icon clarified that the patient, who they said was a regular customer, underwent only one major procedure and a minor touch up.

“It is our responsibility to inform the public about the truth and we are fully cooperating with the investigation. We are also currently extending full support to the family of Ms. Saturnino in their present time of grief,” Attorney Estelita D. Cordero, Icon Clinic’s Legal Counsel said.

The clinic remains operational following Saturnino’s death.

Saturnino will be laid to rest at Green Park Cemetery in Caloocan on Saturday.

Her family is still grieving her untimely loss.

Sabi nila successful naman yung operation, natapos naman yung operation… Ayun successful, patay,” Shirley Saturnino said.
