Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 5) — The Department of Education (DepEd) said it is trying to address the faculty room shortage at the Bacoor National High School.
But it added that the eleven teachers who were using a comfort room as makeshift faculty quarters chose to be there.
“It must be emphasized that the use of restroom is the choice of the 11 teachers themselves who then complained about it in social media,” the DepEd said in a statement, adding that the rest of the 236 teachers in the high school chose different rooms to serve as their temporary faculty rooms.
The Education Department explained that the lack of faculty rooms started when the school implemented a single-shift class system this school year, so the previous faculty rooms had to be converted back to classrooms to accomodate more than 7,000 students.
The faculty rooms, the DepEd added, were originally constructed to be classrooms.
The principal of the high school has already issued a memorandum to the teachers to vacate the restroom.
Moving forward, the DepEd said that it has included in its 2020 budget request more funds for the construction of administration buildings.
“DepEd has included in its 2020 budget request to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) the funding for an initial batch of such buildings that will have space for principal’s office, faculty room, guidance room, library, and school supplies and equipment storage in times of calamities,” it said in a statement.
