Josephine Caranzo Olivar was shot at around 9:30 am in Barangay Bayanan 1, Calapan City. She was rushed to the MMG Hospital.
Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete said they received information that Olivar had five gunshot wounds — two in the head and three in the body.
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 10) — A provincial prosecutor was shot in Oriental Mindoro by unidentified gunmen on Monday morning, a police report said.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he has instructed the National Bureau of Investigation regional director to conduct an investigation. He added the killing may be work-related.
“Our prosecutors’ lives are always at risk due to the nature of their job. We’re hoping that the new Congress will be more sympathetic to the bill providing survivorship benefits to the prosecution service,” Guevarra said.
Olivar joins a slew of prosecutors who have been hurt under the current administration. At least eight prosecutors were attacked since President Rodrigo Duterte took office in June 2016. The police have previously launched investigations on these attacks but maintained they are “isolated cases.”
