Pilot dies in crash of spray plane in Davao del Norte

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 27) — A pilot died in a plane crash in Davao del Norte on Saturday, authorities said.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the pilot was conducting aerial spraying of a banana plantation at 6:53 a.m. when the aircraft hit a live wire, resulting in the crash. The plantation spanned the villages of Kasilak in Panabo town and Mangalcal, Carmen.

“Initial investigations showed that the pilot must have been blinded by the glare of the rising sun causing him to hit and get entangled in a high tension wire,” the CAAP said.

It did not name the pilot, saying the family has yet to be notified. The pilot was on board a Grumman G-164 Ag Cat, a small agricultural plane. Its airframe, engine and propeller were damaged.

Authorities are now investigating the incident.
