(CNN Philippines, January 7) — The Philippine Azkals put on a valiant stand in their maiden appearance at the AFC Asian Cup.
But their debut was spoiled by Korea Republic with a 1-0 victory Monday at the Al Maktoum Stadium in Dubai.
Aware of how potent the Koreans at the offensive end, the Azkals were disciplined at the opposite side in the entire first half.
Despite a huge disparity at the possession, the Philippines held its ground to settle for a scoreless draw at the break.
Korea continued with its relentless attacks which eventually resulted to a Hwang Ui-Jo goal at the 67th minute.
The Azkals tried to score in the latter part of the contest, but the Koreans were able to prevent them from equalizing.
The Philippines will next face China in the group stages, while Korea battles Kyrgyz Republic on the same day.
