Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 10) — The National Water Resources Board is asking the public to use water wisely and responsibly to ensure steady supply amid the pandemic.
NWRB executive director Sevillo David said on Thursday that the water in Angat Dam remains below the normal operating level of 180. He added that Angat Dam’s water level is at 178.35 meters on September 10, and is continuously decreasing in the past days due to lack of rain since July.
Water is crucial in fighting COVID-19 as it is needed for basic hygiene and sanitation such as handwashing.
“(Dahil sa) importance ng water level sa [Because of the importance of water level in the] implementation ng preventive measures against COVID-19, particularly sa [in] handwashing and other sanitation activities, we are maintaining ang level ng allocation ng [the level of allocation of] water supply for Metro Manila at 46 cubic meter per second,” David said.
However, David said there is still a need for close monitoring in coordination with partner agencies. He said in case the climate projection of the water bureau will change and Angat dam will not recover to at least 180 meters, they might have to reduce allocation further to still sustain water supply in the future.
Maynilad water supply operations head Ronald Padua said they have observed an increase in water usage during the day since many people have been staying home due to the ongoing community quarantine.
Water consumption further increased when several commercial and industrial establishments resumed their operations after quarantine restrictions were eased, he added.
David reminded the public to turn off the tap while soaping hands. He also advised the public to store rainwater for other household purposes.
