Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 25) — Most of the coronavirus-hit prisoners in Bureau of Jail Management and Penology facilities have recovered from the disease, the Department of the Interior and Local Government said Saturday.

There are 180 active COVID-19 cases in BJMP-run jail facilities, but the recovery rate is 82 percent, DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in a briefing.

Meanwhile, 69 percent of the BJMP personnel who tested positive for the respiratory infection have also gotten well.

The coronavirus case fatality rate among persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) is at 1 percent while the death rate among the BJMP employees is at .56 percent, Malaya said.

Cebu City Jail, one of the hardest hit BJMP facilities, reported that 400 out of their 427 inmates have gotten well.

It also has not “reported any new case for over a month now,” the Cebu City government noted in a July 17 statement.

Nationwide, the number of survivors is now at 25,752, while the total number of infections has risen to 78, 412. The death toll is now at 1,897.
