Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 10) — Electricity rates for customers of Manila Electric Company are down this July, the power distributor announced on Friday.
Overall rates of Meralco fell to ₱8.966 per kilowatt hour this month, ₱0.0286 per kWh less than the ₱8.7252 per kWh charged in June. The decrease means a typical household consuming 200 kWh a month can expect a reduction of ₱6 in their total bill, explained the company.
This is the third month in a row of downward rate adjustments, the statement read.
“With four straight months of generation rate reduction, and a total rate decrease of more than one peso per kWh since the start of the year, this month’s overall rate is significantly lower than that of July 2019, which was ₱9.9850 per kWh,” Meralco said, adding July’s rate is the lowest since September 2017.

The electricity distributor also saw a lower generation charge in July, dropping to ₱4.3344 per kWh this month from June’s ₱4.3413 per kWh rate. The generation charge accounts for around half of the consumer’s electricity bill.
Meralco said it “continued to invoke the Force Majeure (FM) provision in some of its Power Supply Agreements (PSAs), reducing the generation cost that would have been charged by suppliers” in light of less power demand under community quarantine.
“This July, the FM claim totaled about ₱265 million, equivalent to customer savings of ₱0.0877 per kWh in the generation charge,” it added.
