Angara donates own blood plasma to help infected patients

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 13) — After recovering from COVID-19, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara has donated his own blood plasma to help patients still trying to win their battle against the disease.

In his Instagram post on Monday, the senator shared that his contribution immediately went to a plasma therapy for a patient with a severe case.

“Gave my plasma and it went straight to a hospital in Quezon City to a man on a ventilator — a severe case of COVID-19,” Angara said.

“My wonderful doctors say it could save his life as the antibodies of survivors in the past viruses have done,” said the senator, who contracted the disease last month.

Angara also urged the Department of Health, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, and local government units to exchange information on the COVID-19 survivors to help others fight the virus.

Angara noted that there is a protocol that each COVID-19 survivor can donate blood to one patient every 14 days.

The Philippine General Hospital, one of the government’s referral hospitals for COVID-19, earlier announced that the blood of patients who have recovered from the disease contain antibodies that could help others fight the infection.

Three COVID-19 survivors already donated their blood to the PGH last week.

COVID-19 survivors who wish to donate their blood may contact 155-200 or visit the PGH’s Facebook page for more details.

Gave my plasma and it went straight to a hospital in QC to a man on a ventilator- a severe case of COVID19. My wonderful doctors say it could save his life as the antibodies of survivors in past viruses have done. But right now there is just an informal network of hospitals speaking and exchanging notes as to the survivors giving their plasma. DOH and IATF and LGUs pls exchange data re the covid survivors subject to their privacy rights, so that we can help other fight this virus. I wish I could pay it back every day but the protocol is you can only give your plasma as a survivor every 14 days. Pls pass on to any survivor— they can save lives as we speak! Thanks and pls stay at home and maintain social distancing everyone! #covid19 #bendthecurbe #flattenthecurve #survivor #hope #savinglives #thanksdoctorsandHCWs
